There's no official standard for the word, so look past the marketing. A premium pizza oven earns its price in four places you can actually measure: the stone, the insulation, the materials and the warranty.
Gozney's own range shows the gap well. The Tread is a portable oven with a 12mm stone and one layer of insulation. The Arc XL has a 20mm cordierite stone floor and two layers. More mass and better insulation keep the oven hot from one pizza to the next, which matters far more when you're feeding eight people than when you're making one.
These are real models from our range. Where an Amazon listing and the maker disagree, we've used the maker's figure, checked in November 2026. Listings often quote packaged weight: the Arc XL is 26.5kg, not the 33kg you may see.

A handful of names come up again and again in this market, each with its own approach to design and craftsmanship.
Alfa and the larger Fontana ovens aren't in our grid, but UK specialist retailers stock them. They're worth comparing if you want a traditional Italian oven for an outdoor kitchen.
This choice changes how you'll use the oven more than anything else, so settle it first.
Wood gives you the live flame, the smoky flavour and the authentic cooking ritual that many buyers are really paying for. It also takes more attention, because you need to manage the fire and clear the ash. Igneus quotes 15 to 20 minutes to heat the Classico, and DeliVita 25. Our free standing wood fired pizza ovens show the wider choice.
Burn dry hardwood. In England, logs sold in amounts under 2 cubic metres must be certified Ready to Burn, which means 20% moisture or less.
A gas pizza oven is the easy choice for weeknights: turn a dial, wait, cook, with no ash to clear. Witt quotes about 12 minutes to heat the Piccolo Rotante. You also get finer control, which helps with bread and slower cooking. Most run on propane, so check whether a hose and regulator are included. Smaller options are in our mini gas pizza ovens.
Hybrid models let you switch, with the simple option midweek and real fire at the weekend. The Gozney Roccbox runs on both, and Italian makers offer hybrid versions of their larger ovens.
Each material suits a different kind of owner.

Bigger isn't always better, because a larger chamber takes longer to heat and costs more to run. For two to four people, 12 to 14 inches is plenty, and pizzas cook so fast that nobody waits long. For regular entertaining, 16 to 18 inches gives you room to turn the pizza and fit a roasting tray.
See our extra large pizza ovens if you often cook for a crowd, or commercial pizza ovens for a business.

Decide how permanent this will be, because it affects cost and planning as much as the oven does.
UK prices run from a few hundred pounds to five figures. These are examples seen at UK specialist retailers in November 2026, and they change often:
Allow for extras too. You'll want a peel, a brush, an infrared thermometer and a cover, and they aren't always included. For current prices on the ovens above, open each product page. You can also compare our Ooni pizza ovens or the DeliVita gas and electric ovens.
An outdoor oven gets extremely hot, so siting matters. The London Fire Brigade's barbecue safety advice applies to outdoor cooking of this kind too: use level ground, stay well away from sheds, fences and trees, avoid decking, and change gas cylinders outdoors with the valves off.
Never use one indoors, in a garage or in a tent. Burning fuel in an enclosed space can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Good materials still last longer with some care. Use a fitted cover, and keep a portable oven somewhere dry. Let a damp stone dry out and heat it gently, as a wet stone can crack. Don't wash the stone with soap: burn off food residue, then brush it once cool.
Yes, if outdoor cooking is a regular habit or you often feed groups. Better quality insulation and a thicker stone hold the heat for longer, so the fifth pizza cooks as well as the first. For a few pizzas each summer, a cheaper portable oven is the sensible buy.
Yes. GOV.UK says you can use outdoor pizza ovens in smoke control areas. The exception is an appliance with a chimney on the roof of a building, such as a summerhouse, which can only burn authorised fuel unless it's exempt.
Many are built to live outdoors, but a fitted cover is still worthwhile. Check the maker's advice, especially for ovens with exposed brick or render.
Almost anything: roast meat, vegetables, fish and fresh loaves. Doors and larger chambers make this easier, because you can keep cooking at a lower heat for longer. If you'd rather stay indoors, our electric pizza ovens are designed for it.
