Ooni Koda Pizza Ovens

What are Ooni Koda pizza ovens?

Koda is the gas-only family in the Ooni line-up. Each gas powered pizza oven has a cordierite stone baking board and a powder coated steel shell, and all are built for outdoor use only. If you would rather burn wood or charcoal, look at the Karu ovens instead.

The family spans two generations. The original Koda 12 and Koda 16 are still on sale, while the Koda 2 range added new burners called G2 Gas Technology. Ooni's own Koda range page only promotes the newer three, which is why so many buyers are unsure how the older pair compare.

Every model compared

These figures come from Ooni's UK pages, checked in November 2026. Some retailer listings differ: the Koda 2 is often shown at about 14kg, but the maker says 16kg, so we have used the maker's numbers.

All five reach a top temperature of 500°C and can cook a pizza in 60 seconds. What really separates them:

  • Weight: only the two lightest are easy for one person to move any distance.
  • Thickness: a thicker stone stays hotter between pizzas, which helps when you are feeding a crowd.
  • Warm-up: bigger ovens usually take longer, so plan on half an hour for the largest.

Which one should you buy?

Ooni Koda 12: smallest and easiest to move

The Ooni Koda 12 is the compact pick for camping, picnics or a small balcony, with foldable legs and the lightest body. Its 10mm stone holds less heat in reserve, so allow a short wait between pizzas. Similar small ovens from other brands are in our 12 inch pizza makers, and there are lower-priced options among our cheap portable pizza ovens.

Ooni Koda 2: the all-rounder for most homes

For most households this is the sensible starting point. The maker says the 14in stone comfortably fits a 12in pizza with room to turn it, or two small cast iron pans. It has battery-powered spark ignition, and the folding legs lock in place with non-slip feet. It also holds a steadier temperature than the Koda 12 and reheats 20% quicker, according to Ooni.

Ooni Koda 16: a bigger pizza on older burners

The Ooni Koda 16 uses an L-shaped burner and reaches 500°C in 20 minutes. It is still a capable oven with a wide mouth, and it can make sense when it is on offer. There is instant gas ignition, plus a flame safety device that cuts the supply if the flame blows out.

Ooni Koda 2 Pro: for big pizzas and keen cooks

This one suits people who cook often. The 18in+ stone leaves space for bigger pizzas or sheet pans, the visor lifts off for taller dishes, and the control dial goes as low as 160°C. At 30kg, though, you should treat it as a garden oven rather than a travel one. It comes in a Foundry Black or Slate Blue colour on Amazon.

Koda 2 Max: two ovens in one

The largest model has a 24 x 21in cooking area with two separately controlled zones, so you can bake on one side and cook something gentler on the other. It handles a 20in pizza or two 12in pizzas side by side. It is not always in stock on Amazon, so it may not appear in the grid above. Our extra large pizza ovens list other big options.

First generation or Koda 2?

G2 Gas Technology is the main reason to choose a newer oven. Its tapered flame improves heat distribution, reducing the hot and cold spots that scorch one side of a pizza. Ooni's claims are worth reading closely:

  • Koda 2: temperature swings across the stone cut from 175°C to 85°C.
  • Koda 2 Pro: swings cut from 180°C to 45°C, with reheating up to 25% faster.
  • Cooking range: a wider span of settings for steak, fajitas and roasting.
  • Connectivity: the Digital Temperature Hub links to the Ooni app by Bluetooth.

The maker describes both the L-shaped Koda 16 and the Koda 2 as one turn ovens, so the upgrade is about evenness and recovery rather than less work. The older pair still win on weight for their size, and both were discounted at Ooni in November 2026.

What size do you need?

The size in the name is the biggest pizza that will fit, so leave yourself some room to turn it. As a rough guide:

  • 12in: one or two people, or anywhere you need to carry the oven.
  • 14in: a family making 12in pizzas with room to work.
  • 16in: larger pizzas to share, with a little more weight to move.
  • 18in: regular entertaining, or bigger pans and joints of meat.
  • 20in: parties, or two different dishes at once.

Check the dimensions against your table too. Amazon lists the Koda 2 Pro at 68 x 39 x 64.5cm, so it needs a solid surface.

What gas do they run on?

Bottles and regulators

Ooni says these ovens are optimised for propane and come with a hose and regulator, ideal for clip-on patio gas canisters. You supply the bottle, which in the UK usually means a green patio gas bottle in a 5kg or 13kg size. The gas regulator supplied is the 37mBar type.

Butane is a different matter. Ooni's help guidance for the Koda 12 says you need to swap to a 28-30mBar regulator, so ask the maker first. Its natural gas products are made only for the US and Canada, so UK ovens are not set up for a mains supply.

What it costs to run

The Technology Man tested a Koda 2 at full power for two hours in the UK and it used just over 400g, or about 80p an hour with 13kg priced at £52.50. At that rate a 5kg bottle would give roughly 25 hours. Ooni's own figure is 0.39kg for 10 pizzas. US retailer listings suggest the twin-burner Pro uses about twice as much.

The same test reached 400°C after 25 minutes on a snowy day, peaking near 450°C, so allow extra time in winter.

Getting the best results

Launching a pizza from a wooden peel into a portable gas oven, like Ooni Koda pizza ovens, with a steak in a cast iron pan
  • Preheat at full power, then measure the stone rather than the air with an infrared thermometer.
  • Aim for about 400°C for a Neapolitan style pizza, which is cooler than the top setting.
  • Use a peel to launch and turn, and let the oven recover between pizzas.
  • Turn the heat down for steak, fish, meat and vegetable cooking in a cast iron skillet.

Accessories worth adding

You get the oven, stone baking board, regulator and hose, but no peel. Budget for these:

  • A peel: a 12-14in one suits the Koda 2, and larger ovens need a wider blade.
  • A cover: Ooni makes fitted waterproof ones for protection between cooks.
  • A table: it must be sturdy and heat resistant, especially for the heavier ovens.

Warranty

All Ooni products get a 1 year warranty as standard. Register within 60 days and each model moves to a 5 year warranty, though the regulator and hose stay at two years. The 5 year warranty is promoted on ooni.com, so keep your proof of purchase and read the warranty terms before you buy from a retailer.

Ooni Koda FAQs

Can you use one indoors or in a tent?

No. Ooni says its gas ovens are for outdoor use only. The NHS warns against using barbecues or camping stoves inside because of carbon monoxide, and the same care applies to a garage or enclosed gazebo.

Does it work like a gas BBQ?

Not as a grill, as there are no bars over the flame. With a cast iron pan on the stone, though, it will sear steak and roast fish well.

Can you burn wood in it?

No, this range is gas only.

Can you leave it outside?

The shell is built to cope with the weather, but we would use a cover, disconnect the bottle and bring it under shelter for winter.

Is there much assembly?

On the Koda 2, very little. Unfold the legs, slide in the stone and connect the gas, and you can be ready to light within minutes.
